Red Dragon is based in Bridgend in South Wales and has been going since 1975. Two automotive engineers fell for the game while at work and started building their own darts. Three years later they were the first to produce tungsten darts on a large scale, which suddenly put professional-grade equipment within reach of ordinary players. The brand still designs and machines everything in its own factory, and its darts go out to more than a hundred countries. Red Dragon is part of the Welsh Nodor Group, which also owns Winmau.
At the development lab in Bridgend, the designers sit down directly with players such as Luke Humphries, Gerwyn Price, Peter Wright, Jonny Clayton and Gian van Veen. For every player they hunt for the right barrel shape, the right grip and the right balance, and whatever proves itself there turns up later in the darts you find in the shop. A signature set from Red Dragon is not a logo stuck onto an existing dart, but a setup built around a single throw from the first sketch onwards.
If you are just starting out, brass darts are a sensible place to begin. They cost less and are slightly thicker, so you can take your time working out what kind of throw suits you. Once you start playing more seriously, tungsten is the next step: the material weighs more per cubic millimetre, so at the same weight you get a slimmer barrel and your three darts land closer together in the board. At the top of the range you will find hard coatings and finely milled grip patterns, made to the specifications of players in the world elite.
Alongside darts, Red Dragon makes shafts, flights, points, dart cases and training accessories. Those parts are matched to one another, so you can fine-tune your setup step by step without switching brands.
